Cheryl Baker Answers Your Questions
Part 5 - July 2007

Hi Guys,

I’m sure many of you may be upset at some of what I have written. My daughter is telling me to take some of the stuff out; she thinks you’ll see me as ‘the bad guy’. (In fact, I have just removed another paragraph at her insistence!) If that’s the way you feel, I’m sorry.

Bucks Fizz has been my life for many years and I love it. I’m proud of the songs (well, most of them!) and I’m thrilled that we have had the opportunity to do so very much, plus it gave me the chance to be a TV presenter.

Please don’t kid yourself that everything’s rosy, though. Life is tough. People have attitudes, tempers, we don’t all get along. Just look at your own life and the people you deal with daily. Do you get on with them all? Do they ever drive you nuts? Do you ever think they’re wrong?

All I ask is that you give us some slack, guys. We’re only human !!

Speak again soon........

  • Q Hi Cheryl!

I was watching the routine for Talking In Your Sleep the other day and wondered what the idea was behind the part you and Jay did on the floor?!!

Saw you in Footloose the other day, by the way, and really enjoyed it! You were great and seemed to be having great fun!

Hope you and the family are all well and happy?!
    Take care!

    (Submitted By David Davensac)

    A Hi David,

The Talking in your Sleep routine was another Chrissy Wickham one (the choreographer who did Making Your Mind Up). She choreographed loads of our early stuff. She liked to be controversial wherever possible! To be honest, it was a bit embarrassing at first, all that face-touching and orgasmic looks, but we performed it so many times that, in the end, it was just another routine.

Glad you enjoyed Footloose. I absolutely loved it. I went to see it myself when it was on tour, and saw many of my babies (the dancers) there. It was weird, like watching my family. You really do become close when you work with people so intensely and for so long, especially when they’re all so much younger. I was like their mum.

Thanks for your good wishes to the family. We’re all fab, and looking forward to the summer – if there ever is one!

    Cheryl xx

    Q Hi Cheryl

I would just like to say that you were marvelous in footloose and if there were any other musicals that you would like to do, or you may have some in the pipeline, also what has happened to you and eastenders you would be fantastic behind the bar at the queen vic, now that Wendy Richards is going they need another true eastender, also what has happened to your autobiography that would make wonderful reading.
    (Submitted by Robbie)

    A Hi Robbie,

Glad you enjoyed Footloose. I looooooved it so much! I have been asked to do several musicals since then, but I’ve turned them all down. I have spent the last year getting my life back! As much as I loved the show, it really takes its toll on your family life. I miss the weekly wage, though! I probably will go back into the theatre at some time, but I’m not ready yet.

Eastenders? Yes, I should go for another audition. I thought I did OK at the last one, which must have been 3 or 4 years ago now. Trouble is, they’d have to lighten the stories up a bit – well, a lot, actually! It’s all so depressing at the moment, isn’t it?

As for the biography, I am working on it – slowly. Maybe I should get a ghost-writer in and I’ll just rabbit away and they can write it down. It might get done that way!

  • Q

I know Oh Suzanne isn't one of your favourite songs but I think it is your finest vocal performance with Bucks Fizz. I love it. My question is...why was the decision taken to re-record Oh Suzanne after Jay had already done a version? Did you feel bad about it or were neither of you particularly bothered?

I also wonder if you felt a bit miffed when You and your heart so blue was re-recorded by Bobby after you had done such a great version. I would have loved to hear your vocal with the up-beat arrangement that became the single.
    (Submitted by Ben)

A Hi Ben, you controversial Fizzer you.

There have been times when I’ve wanted to smack your arse, but, in the words of a great Bucks Fizz song, now those days are gone!

Thanks for the compliment re Oh Suzanne. To be perfectly honest, I don’t really like my voice on many of the leads I sing. However, I love hearing the harmonies and knowing that I am a major part of the sound of Bucks Fizz because of them.

I don’t remember knowing that Jay had recorded Oh Suzanne, neither do I remember recording the lead on You and Your Heart So Blue. It was as much a surprise for me as it was for you when I heard it on Lost Masters! I love it when all the vocals are in, but I hate that bit at the end "I did everything!" Ugh!!

  • Q

Firstly, thanks a million for my personal birthday message(back in April). I was shocked, stunned and overjoyed with it!! (my partner works on a Southampton radio station and he asked one of his colleagues who interviewed you while you were here for Footloose to record a wee message from you to me!! You probably won't remember, you I'll never forget hearing it for the first time!!!!! Thank you, thank you thank!!!)

Anyway, my question(s) to you, cast your mind back and please tell us a bit more about the Bucks Fizz penned and produced songs. Was this something you all agreed to do together? Were the record company encouraging you to wrote songs together? Who decided who sang what? I have a cosy image of you all sitting around, having fun and enjoying it, but I fear it wasn't really like that! Of the Fizz penned songs which was your fav? I loved them all, but Takin' me Higher and When We Were At War!

Lots of love to you, and please let's have you gigging again soon please.
    (Submitted by Southampton Pete)

    A Hello Pete,

I expect you’ve had another birthday since my last message so I hope that one was good as well!

The record company couldn’t have cared less who wrote the B sides or album tracks, but I think they knew where their bread was buttered with Andy. At the time, he was prolific. Nowadays, if an artist is successful they almost always get part of the writing royalty, even if they didn’t actually write it. I know this, because of my niece, Julie. She has had to share her royalties with artists even though they didn’t write a note. But in the 80’s, the singers sang and the writers wrote.

Andy shared some of the writing with Nichola Martin (forgive me Nic, but I don’t believe you had that much to do with the songs you’re credited with). It was Nichola, though, who asked us to pen a b-side each. We were given a budget - £2,000, I think – which is how each of us (apart from Mike) got a B-side. The ones we wrote together, we actually did write together! I remember sitting in Jay’s house when she lived near Wimbledon and writing When We Were At War (I think). It was all very amiable. I don’t remember but it was probably Bobby who played the chords on the guitar.

Taking me Higher was based on a song that I wrote, driving down Maida Vale towards Marble Arch. Can’t remember where we fine-tuned that one. The one and only track we wrote with Andy was written over lunch whilst recording our first album.

  • Q Heya,

I've been watching over and over the youtube Are You Ready performance and I have a couple questions about it.

1 - It looks like you were having a great time doing this routine. What do you remember about the European promo for it?.
2 - who came up with the 'bouncing'?
3 - how on earth did you manage to do that in those boots!! ?
4 - Do you know why Are you ready was never a UK Single?
5 - Any chance next time at GAY that you mike and Shelley can do the song and the routine? heheh

    (submitted by Mark)

    A

1 - I couldn’t watch it on Youtube as there is a violation, or something. I saw the one we did on ‘Countdown’ in Australia. I don’t remember promoting Are You Ready in Europe. Did we? We certainly did in Japan; we won the Yamaha Song Festival ‘Best Song’ award in November 1981

2 - It was a Chrissy Wickham routine. She used to be in Hot Gossip but had a bad fall, which affected her glands or something. Anyway, she ballooned and was unable to dance professionally again. She was a superb choreographer, though. Even though she was a very big girl, she could do those bounces better than we could!

3 - I could do anything in those boots!

    4 - I have no idea. I s’pose it was a record company decision.

5 - As I don’t have the boots any more, it’s highly unlikely! Seriously, if we had the backing tracks (without the vocals) we would be able to vary our gigs much more.

  • Q Hi Cheryl,

Can you remember anything about the recording of El mundo de illusion album?

    (Submitted by Ajh2ajh)

    A

Oh yes! Every song was written phonetically, so ‘El Mundo de Illusion’ became ‘Elmondo day looshon’. I really enjoyed doing that album, and thought some of the songs sounded really romantic. Spanish is a lovely language, isn’t it?

can you recall being told you were gonna do it and your reaction?

I think we were all thrilled to be asked. Some time after, we were invited to Chile to perform at a massive festival there. We were able to sing Land of Make Believe in Spanish and it went down really well.

could any of the group speak Spanish (or any language for that matter aside English)

As I remember, none of us could speak proper English, let alone Spanish!

how did you learn the Spanish for it?

We didn’t learn, although I can say a few words now. As I said earlier, we read the words phonetically.

can u still sing it all the way thru in Spanish ha ha?

Sort of, although some of the words I have forgotten. Also, my pronunciation is probably dreadful now!

  • Q Cheryl,

Thanks so very much for being part of Comic Relief and for making my Christmas complete by reuniting with ALL of the group. I've seen the video several times now - was it as fun to make as it looks and how many takes were there before everyone was happy!

    Thanks a million Cheryl

    (Submitted by Katherine)

    A Hi Katherine,

The video for ‘500’ miles looks like we’re all having a great party, doesn’t it? In fact, each group of people was recorded separately in 15 minute intervals. We were in a big room with tables and chairs, fake drinks, party poppers etc. The only people who were in the room were us plus David Bellamy (a strange pairing) and about 6 extras who stood behind. We weren’t watching the performance on stage, we were actually watching a recording of it on a screen. They played it about 3 times, taking different camera angles, then we were done. It’s amazing how, when it was all cut together, it looks as though we were at a fabulous party!

    Cheryl xx

  • Q Hi Cheryl,

Firstly.. I hope the excitement on this board goes some way to reflecting the overwhelming feeling of happiness that you all made it into the same room and it not turning into celebrity deathmatch... haha

I'd like to ask the range of emotions you went through when you were asked to do it, knowing that it could potentially have been a horrible horrible day for lots of people.

How nervous were you before you walked into the room? What went through your head when you saw Jay, and was there anything that you wish you had had the chance to say but didnt (hehe that's a cheeky one but had to ask!)

Obviously everyone is getting very excited about the chance of another show with lots more members... (ha of course we cant have them all you would rival the London Gospel Choir!) - i know the question has been asked before, but it seems almost appropriate to ask it again. Would you ever consider performing as a 5 piece?

Thanks Cheryl... only ever asked one question before.... but Phil and Fern won't budge haha!

    (Submitted by Chris Scott)

    A Hi Chris,

  • I was absolutely thrilled when we were asked to be a part of the Comic Relief single.

Read Mark’s answer below for the controversy!

    Cheryl xx

    Q Hi cheryl,

I was just wondering, what the story was behind the peter Kay video, like who's idea was it to get all 5 of you back together, was it a decision to do that or was it just a coincidence that all 5 of you turned up for it, and how did you feel about it at the time, knowing that Jay would be there? did you consider not doing it?

did you and Jay manage to have a bit of a chat about the past, do you think you and jay would get a long better now, (Being older and wiser etc) and without the added pressure of a busy Bucks Fizz schedule.

WERE A NOSEY LOT AREN'T WE?
    thanks Cheryl

    (Submitted by Mark)

A Hi Mark, keep up the good work with the website!

Right, I’ll probably upset a lot of people now but I’m sick of having to pretend everything’s fine. In fact, I’ve kept this answer fairly sweet. I wrote a few paragraphs and had to delete them ‘cause I don’t think Fizz fans are ready for them yet! Here we go…..

Regarding the Comic Relief video, the first one they asked was Bobby, who then rang Jay. So, obviously we had a problem because I work with Shelley, not Jay. I spoke to the TV people and told them I was happy to work with Jay, but could Shelley be there too? They explained that they wanted the original four. I told them I understood, but as I hadn’t had anything to do with Jay for many years but had shared my home with Shelley for the year previous, plus I was working with her, it put me in a very difficult position. After some time and some persuading, they agreed. Let’s face it, whether Jay, Shelley or both were there, it wasn’t going to affect sales, was it?

Things were a little difficult at the studio. Shelley was made to feel very uncomfortable by Bobby. I had been working for the BBC and was on my way from Canterbury to the studio. I had non-stop phone calls from Shelley, some in tears. The suggestion was that Shelley stand on her own with the rest of us at another table. Can you imagine how she felt? There was little I could do en-route, but when I arrived the problem had been solved. You saw the outcome.

Jay and I were fine. Conversation was a little difficult to begin with but after a while we were OK. Jay, Shelley and I shared a changing room and the three of us were chatting – politely, I guess – but still chatting!

As for working as 5, well, technically it would be difficult but could be done. I believe Jay would be up for it, as Mike, Shelley and I would. I feel sure though, that Bobby would not. Bob and I have always been at loggerheads, but we’ve also always worked well together. I wish him every success in everything he does, and miss his vocals when we perform. But together again? I doubt that very much.

  • Q Hi Cheryl,

Firstly wow thanks for doing the Nuneaton carnival I live here and cant believe you will be coming here, whats the connection with Nuneaton as I know you came here a few years ago to hand awards out for social services.I am so nervous about meeting you.

My question is ,what's your thoughts about Youtube how do you feel about seeing all those old clips must bring some memories flooding back, have you some favs or even have you some clips YOU could add ,things that we have never seen.

Thanks again for everything(well not everything but you know what I mean!)
Best wishes to you and yours.

    (Submitted by Gary Pettitt)

    A Hi Gary,

I thoroughly enjoyed the carnival, until the heavens opened! Blimey, didn’t it rain! I have no connection with Nuneaton at all – I was just asked to be there, that’s all.

As for Youtube – I love it! There’s stuff on there that I can’t remember doing – in fact, most of it I can’t remember doing! I liked seeing me and Jay with Mad Lizzie on TVAM best of all I think. I would love to have that midriff again!

  • Q Hey Lovely One, how are you. I've 3 questions if you don't mind.

    1. I was wondering what made you choose Cheryl Baker as your stage name? I just had to choose a stage name.. I got my equity card just 4 weeks ago, But someone had my name already. So I just changed my last name from 'Richardson' to 'Mendez'. How come you didn't 'go' with Bonnie Silver! I remember Mike Read reading out a letter on your 'This is Your Life' show and mentioning it.

    2. Also. I thought the 'Saturday Picture Show' was excellent and I thought you had a great chemistry with Mark Curry. Did you know that there was always going to be just one series of it? And do you ever run into Mark? It looked like you got on very well.

    3. My last question is.. I am often pleased when other famous people say they either are or were fans of Bucks Fizz. Where you ever told by anyone famous that they liked the group? I know the 'Human League' always said they like Bucks Fizz. And the lead singer of Deacon Blue has a couple of times praised the group?

Thanks for replying to my last set of questions. I'm glad you remembered coming to the Isle of Man. Take care lovely one.

    (Submitted by Stu)

    A Hi Stu,

Stuart Mendez sounds stage-ier than Stuart Richardson, doesn’t it? As does Cheryl Baker, in comparison to Rita Crudgington! What a name! Thanks dad! Seriously, the first band I joined (Mother’s Pride) told me my name had to go because it wasn’t stagy enough. As you know, I changed it to Bonny Silver. I chose Bonny because I knew someone with that name and I thought it sounded friendly, and Silver because it was my mum’s maiden name. They called me Bonny for a week or so, then said they thought it was too stagy so I had to change it again. I honestly can’t remember whether it was me or someone else who chose Cheryl, but I think it was me who chose Baker. I wanted a name you could pronounce and spell. After ‘Crudgington’, any name would have done!

I loved working with Mark Curry on the Saturday Picture Show. I think it had been running a couple of years before (I could be wrong) and it just so happened that the one that I did was the last one. I do indeed run into Mark every now and again. We keep in touch via Christmas cards. I love him to death and would love to work with him again.

I think there are quite a few famous people who liked Fizz. Shelley met Victoria Beckham who said she loved us and that Shelley was her favourite! I know Emma Bunton has mentioned us before as well. Patsy Palmer was a massive fan when she was a child. I often work with people who say they loved us and that they had the rip-off skirt made etc. Bless!

    Cheryl xx

    Q Hi Cheryl,

Could I ask you just a few things well here goes

    1. Why were there no videos made for ONE OF THOSE NIGHTS & MAGICAL

    2. When you won Eurovision in 81 did you follow the UK entry's that came after you and think that's going to win but didn't, like when I thought BARDO should have.

    3. When You & Your Heart So Blue was released did anyone consider your lead vocal instead of Bobby's should be the one that is released

    4. and my last question is do you think we could ever win the Eurovision again with all the silly scoring going on and do you think it will ever change.

Well that's it just to say thank you very much for bringing BUCKS FIZZ into my life and answering everybody's questions your fantastic and I love you to bits, sorry getting carried away here as vie only just joined this site and love everything about BUCKS FIZZ. Thanks again take care & love to your family.

    (Submitted by ROGER)

    A Hello Roger,

    1. Can’t tell you why there was no id for One of those Nights or Magical. I guess it was a decision by the record company.

    2. I have always watched Eurovision; I love it! I thought the UK would win a couple of times, especially with Bardo, and was surprised when we actually did win with Katrina. I love her and the song is OK, but I didn’t think it was a winning song.

    3. Do you know, I don’t remember singing the lead on You and Your Heart so Blue. How weird is that! I don’t know whether my version was ever considered as the single but it didn’t bother me that Bobby sang it.

    4. Until they change the format of Eurovision, I doubt we will ever win again. When I think back to 1978 when I was in Co-Co and we came 11th in the Eurovision, we were distraught. We felt as though we’d let the country down. Blimey! Nowadays, we’d all be celebrating if we came 11th !

  • Q Hi Cheryl,

I have ten questions regarding the CD/DVD release!

    (Submitted by Ben)

    A
    1. Did you expect Jay and Bobby to be at the meeting at the record company?

    Yes I did.

    2. Did anyone check whether Jay or Bobby knew that the meeting was on?

About half-way through I asked where they were, and was told they had been invited but couldn’t make it.

    3. Why was the meeting not rescheduled for a time when everyone could make?

Why should it have been? Bugger going home again just because they couldn’t be there! It was between Sony BMG and Bob and Jay.

    4. How do you respond to Jay's sense of hurt that she has been excluded from the promotional activities?

Mike, Shelley and I are represented by Liz Hobbs Group. It was through Liz and Sony BMG that we were doing as much promotion as possible. To put another cat among the pigeons, I was told by Sony BMG that Jay and Bob wouldn’t promote without getting paid. In fact, at the Comic Relief video, Jay herself endorsed that to my face. When I was asked to do the Lottery, I suggested Jay do it instead as Mike, Shelley and I would be in Gran Canaria. I’m glad she did it ‘cause it would have been nuts not to.

    5. Do you think this is a quality product?

Come on, let’s face it. Bucks Fizz were never going to top the charts again. I’m thrilled it was as good as it was. A free DVD? Brilliant! It’s not the best CD in the world, but it’s great to be in the charts again, albeit by the skin of our teeth!

    6. Why is Rules of the Game excluded from both the CD and DVD? Is this at your request? If so, why?

Of course it isn’t my request! You worry me sometimes, you really do! They put on the tracks they wanted to. They chose the running order. They offered us a choice of a white background label or a black one. That’s about as far as our input went on this CD. Oh, apart from my words, which they asked me to do.

    7. Why have Dean and Kevin not been included in the work on this release as it is using their previous work from 'The Ultimate Anthology'?

    I have no idea.

    8. Were you aware that Ian was working on a dvd release entitled 'I see talk'? Do you understand why fans feel a bit disappointed with the DVD that is replacing Ian's as it is missing Rules of the Game and contains no extras?

Yes I was and yes I do. I sent Ian an e-mail saying how sorry I was. I hope his DVD sees the light of day soon.

    9. In light of all the controversy on these boards surrounding the release of the CD and DVD, do you think, in hindsight, that things could have been done differently and better?

Hindsight is a marvelous thing, isn’t it? Whatever we think, it’s done. There’s nothing we can do about it.

    10. Finally! Do you like the cover?!!

I bow to their judgement. Sony BMG said that it was the kind of cover that is eye-catching and would be better than a photo. Talking of photos, I think it was wrong that they didn’t include a photo of Fizz with Shelley. Yet another smack in the mouth for her.

    Cheryl xx

  • Q Hi Cheryl,

Is there any chance you could do any gigs at child friendly places. I have daughters aged 11 and 9 who have to have bucks fizz and nobody else. What the saying [daughter like mother] I really did t think I would have any chance of taking my girls to bucks fizz and I cannot wait .thanks.
(Submitted by Rules of the game)

    A
Trouble is, the kind of gigs we do are rarely child-friendly. Apart from festivals, they seem to be private functions, gay clubs and 80’s nights in bars. Don’t give up hope, though. You never know…..

    Cheryl xx

  • Q Hi Cheryl,

I've not written to you before but, Did you read my biography of your earlier years in the "Golden Days" fanzine? and if you did, did I get it right?

Also, if someone asked you to sing it - would you still remember the words to "Gonna Do My Best"?
    Much love,

    (Submitted by Michael)

    A

Oh Michael, I haven’t seen Golden Days for quite a while now. The last one was at least a year ago. Whenever I see Steve Jacks, he gives me a bundle of back-numbers! Looking forward to reading the biography then.

As for ‘Gonna Do My Best’ – well, I could sing some of it but I certainly couldn’t remember it all. It came last in A Song For Europe 1980! I did the routine completely opposite to the others at one point, but they said that I did it with such conviction that it looked as though they were wrong!

    Cheryl xx

  • Q Hi Cheryl!

Richiejay here again! Thanks for answering both sets of my questions last time! Very kind of you! Just wanted to say a big THANKYOU to you, Mike & Shelley for your show in Gran Canaria. Did you enjoy doing it?

It was great to have an excuse to take a holiday over there and I really enjoyed the show (despite of the sound problems!) it was great to see you perform so many songs and headline the show. Great to see you sing Heart of Stone and Shelley, Love The One You're With. (An interesting set, who came up with the song choices? Fab!!)

Thanks also for coming over and talking to some of the fans behind the fencing after the show -(it was around 1am by then as I remember!) you're a trooper! (Sorry for sticking a camera right in front of your face, but got a great picture!!!!)

I hope the three of you enjoyed your time there as much as the rest of us did! (Hope you got to see some of the island and that it wasn't just a flying visit - did you take the family?).

Can't wait to see you perform again, going to try my best to get to as many gigs as possible! (Heck, if I can fly over to Gran Canaria just to see you, then Birmingham should be fairly easy!!!)

Oh, and congratulations on The Very Best of.. chart position! (Number 40 as I type!)

Thanks again for all your hard work and continuing to answer our questions (can't wait to read your answers to BenWiganUK's questions! I think he's asking what everyone else is thinking!

Lots of love to you and your family,

    (submitted by Richie)

    A Hi Richie,

So glad you made it to Gran Canaria. I was thrilled we topped the bill. I thought it would be Marc Almond. And of course we would come and say hi. It’s the least we could do, after you flying all that way to see us!

We’re limited to what songs we can do, as we only have so many that are just backing tracks. Apart from New Beginning, which obviously has to have all the backing on (or it would sound soooo empty!) all the tracks are just the backing music, which we sing live to. As I mentioned in an earlier answer, it would be great to be able to vary the act more.

Gran Canaria was a flying visit. We flew in late on Friday night, rehearsed Saturday daytime, did the gig (very late!) on Saturday night and flew home – via Madrid – on Sunday. That was a horrible journey!

Hope you didn’t come to Birmingham. What a dive! We sang 2-and-a-half songs, I think, before giving up. The sound was atrocious, no monitors, feed-back, you name it, we had it.

Come and see us at a decent venue!

    Cheryl xx

  • Q Cheryl,

How's the autobiography? and bearing in mind by your own admission you have a shocking memory can you recall one funny story regarding either the recording or TV performance for each single??

    (Submitted by Ajh2ajh)

    A

The autobiography is slowly coming along…..and I mean, slowly!
Ha-ha! Can I recall one funny story for each single? Don’t be daft! I can’t even remember each single!

  • Q Cheryl,

It must seem like a million years ago, to you now, but can you remember how the TV special 'Magic In Mauritius' was supposed to have ended up like? Was there a structure? Can you remember what scenes, songs, etc, were shot? Were there to be video clips, or did you record scenes, say, routines on location?

    Thank you,

    (submitted by Terry(HC))

    A Hi Terry,

I believe the Mauritius TV special was to be a sort-of ‘Bucks Fizz after the coach crash’ type of story. So yes, it had performances in it, but also clips of us on the island doing stuff. You know, walking through the sugar plantation, strolling along the beach, visiting the local town; a bit like a travelogue. Some of the songs we performed on a stage in front of an audience, some of them were shot like a video. I remember shooting You Love Love on a beach, looking longingly out to sea (for a sailor on an island, probably!)

    Cheryl xx

  • Q Cheryl,

I have been a fan of bucks fizz for a long time I once seen you a butlins and I always remember you stopped moving on stage so that we could get a photo .after seeing you on stage I started to collect some of you solo singles you released which by the way I thought were great especially , if paradise is half a nice , could not understand why it didn't do really well it was a great song ! my question is why didn't you go on to record a whole solo album .

    (Submitted by Dave)

    A Oh Dave,

As I’ve said many times, I’m not a solo singer. I don’t like my voice and I don’t think it’s individual enough. I love to hear my vocals as backing, though. I’ve read that I was recording an album back in the 80’s, although I don’t remember it myself. No surprise there, then! I’d love to do a jazz-type album, and put it out under another name. I think people see me as ‘bubbly Cheryl from Bucks Fizz and TV’ and wouldn’t take me seriously as a jazz singer.

    Cheryl xx

  • Q Hi Cheryl, me again!

Can you tell us .... when you/Bucks Fizz mimed a song, say on TOTPs, did you actual sing along to the track or simply mouth the words? I was thinking it must be parculiar, in a love song, say Heart Of Stone, to be singing in to someone's eyes, but with nothing coming out of your mouth!

    Thanks

A Hi Terry, me again too!

Do you know, I was only talking about this today with my children. Everyone mimed in the 80’s. They just didn’t have the facility for us to sing live. They used to give us those silver stick-type mics that obviously weren’t real. But to get the right mouth movements you have to sing the same as it sounds on the track. I think it would be impossible to mime to a gutsy song and not actually sing it.

Talk to you again soon
